Principal's Weekly Message - February 4

Happy Friday!

We have reached the midway point of the 3rd quarter and progress reports will be sent home next Friday. Grades will be posted in Infinite Campus on Tuesday. Please check in with your student about any missing assignments and check their attendance if you have concerns. Often excessive tardies are a parent's clue that their student is losing focus.

Volunteer Opportunities:

1. We are still in need of a few reading coaches. Each coach is paired with a 6th grader and reads with that student on Tuesdays from 10:30-11:05. Please contact Stephanie Travaille if you are able to make a once per week commitment. (stephanietravaille@berkeley.net).

2. The PTA has approved funding for every student to receive a King sweatshirt. We need someone to take on this project in order for it to happen.

3. We are looking for an e-tree coordinator to take over from Joann Marshall.

Tuesday night is our PTA meeting at 6:30 followed by Parent Education at 7PM. The parent ed series is the 3rd in a 4 part series with Dr. Rachelle Rogers Ard.

Session III: Whiteness & Caste: The racial pyramid on which US culture is based

This session will present the beginning of the term "white" as it relates to race in the US, as well as discuss the racial caste system on which the US culture is based. Participants should be prepared to stretch their thinking and remain in a non-judgemental, believing, and learning space. This session may be 2 hours. Warning: the material may be triggering.

We tested 884 students and staff today and found zero positive cases of Covid. Great news! Thank you to everyone who continues to keep students home when they are ill. Below is the weekly letter that reflects last week's elevated cases and testing information for this coming week. We are continuing to test twice per week per district guidelines. Thanks to all of the volunteers through Berkeley Schools Volunteers, a project within the Berkeley Schools Fund.

Have a great weekend!

Dear Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School Community,

Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School is experiencing an elevated COVID-19 risk during the Omicron surge. Working with our Public Health partners at the City of Berkeley, we are shifting our case response focus to twice-weekly school-wide testing of students and staff and community-wide COVID risk notifications, rather than individual exposure letters for students.

We will be testing all Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School students and staff on the following dates:

Monday, February 7, 2022 from 9:15 AM-12:00 PM.

Friday, February 11, 2022 from 9:15 AM-12:00 PM.

Most Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School students and staff are already registered for BUSD’s free COVID-19 testing. Anyone not registered for testing can register here. This is one-time registration only. It is not necessary to register for each test date.

This twice-weekly testing will provide a faster and more efficient way of identifying students and staff who have COVID at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School , which will slow the spread of COVID at our school.

In the last seven days, 12 COVID-19 cases have been identified as having been on campus while infectious. We will continue to watch our case numbers and, in consultation with the City of Berkeley Health Department, make a determination about the pace of future testing.

Please refer to the COVID Case Dashboard to see case numbers on a daily basis.
