October and November 2012
As part of our healthy living focus and climate change unit, all 6th graders at King will be participating in the “Drive Your Bike to School” training and field trip supported by Cycles of Change during the months of October and November. The Bicycle Safety Certification Program is an in-class and on-the-bike safety training. Students learn how to perform a bike safety check, adjust helmets, communicate with traffic, abide by the rules of the road, maneuver through intersections, and safely navigate their school’s neighborhood by bike. The bike fleet, equipment and training, are provided by Cycles of Change. This program encourages the use of bikes as a means of sustainable, affordable transportation, as well as helping students develop healthy lifestyles from a young age. Each 6th grade class will ride to and from Aquatic Park (see schedule below) with their first period core teacher.

How You Can Help
Contribute
We are asking for a contribution of $10 per student to help defray the costs of this field trip and program. You may also sponsor another student or make a donation to the program to help us cover the costs of Cycles of Change staff and equipment. No student will be denied participation due to lack of funds.
Volunteer
Trip volunteers: We need volunteers for each trip. Please let your child’s teacher know if you can volunteer in any of the following ways:
- At least 3 parents are needed to ride during a trip to assist teachers and Cycle of Change staff in ensuring a safe ride.
- If you can not ride with the class but would like to help, parent volunteers are needed from 9:00–10:00 and 2:00–3:00 pm to assist with bike distribution and putting bikes away after the ride.
- Helmet fitting: The day before the trip, parent volunteers are needed to help fit helmets. Check with your child’s teacher about the time.
General volunteers: Please email Rebecca Burke at rebeccaburke@berkeley.net if you are able to assist with either of the following:
- Learn-to-Ride Clinic: We need parent volunteers to help with the Learn to Ride Clinic on Oct. 22 and 23, 12:00–4:00 pm. The more the merrier!
- Transporting Bikes: We will need several parents to assist Cycles Staff transporting bikes to and from King. This involves driving the truck and loading and unloading the bikes. This will happen before the first bike trip and after the last one. The exact dates are still to be determined.
Donate Bikes
Cycles of Change is an amazing organization dedicated to cycling as a means of transportation and healthy living. They can always use more bikes. If you have bikes to donate, contact your child’s teacher.
