Parent Education programs are offered throughout the year, often following PTA meetings. PTA meetings are at 6:30, with Parent Education following at 7:00, both in the Teachers Lounge.

Navigating the Middle School Years: Is this normal?

Cathy Carr, veteran middle school teacher and local family therapist, will explore common developmental changes, warning signs of more serious distress, and parenting tips rooted in recognizing and celebrating the developmental changes in middle schoolers. We will explore how to differentiate between “normal” middle school behaviors and warning signs of excessive stress, sadness, anxiety, etc. and look at ways parents can stay connected and help their middle schoolers navigate the inherent changes that are part of these exciting (and daunting) middle school years.

This interactive workshop focuses on test preparation and time management strategies and how to apply them to homework, long-term projects, and test prep. Come learn together and create a shared language around study habits so that your students have the tools they need to be successful and you can follow up at home. Enhancing Student Motivation
King parent and educational psychologist Tim Urdan

Parents and educators share a concern with how to motivate students. In this discussion, Dr. Tim Urdan (Professor of Educational Psychology at Santa Clara University, motivation researcher, and parent of a King 6th grader) will discuss what the research shows about the best practices for motivating early adolescent students. He will also present concrete strategies that parents and teachers can use to enhance student motivation. The presentation will include a consideration of the negative unintended consequences of techniques that parents and teachers often use to try to motivate students.
