Writer Coach Connection

Enjoy the satisfaction of making a difference to students and teachers at King Middle School. WriterCoach Connection (WCC), formerly Writers' Room, pairs trained volunteers with 8th grade students to help them master the writing and critical thinking skills needed to complete assignments and succeed. Coaches commit to a regular, 1.5 hour/week assignment and meet weekly, during the school day, to work one-on-one with students in their English classes.

WriterCoach Connection trains you to be a coach; you don't have to be a writer or educator. Learn step-by-step methods to coach students (including your own) at one of the training sessions:

You don’t have to be a writer or teacher. Register today and learn strategies to help teens—including your own—gain confidence, improve skills and complete assignments:

WCC coaches represent diverse ethnicities, ages, and walks of life— all are welcome! Join a fabulous team of volunteers this year. For info or to register: http://www.writercoachconnection.org (click “Volunteer” to sign up)

Testimony from a training coach::

"I wanted to let people know how much I enjoyed being a writer coach last year. The once-a-
week schedule, for less than two hours, was not too much to ask of a busy parent -- it went
very quickly, and never interferes with holidays.

Getting to know a handful of eighth graders was really wonderful. Although I was a little
nervous about my writing skills and about coaching, I'm really glad I didn't let that stop me. If
you have graduated from high school, you are sufficiently proficient in grammar and other
writing skills to be a coach. And if you have a middle-school age student right now, then you
have already had plenty of practice with your own child to be encouraging and supportive.
The students always give positive feedback about the usefulness of this program. I hope
everyone who happens to be free during the specific time slots (Tuesdays or Thursdays,
maybe 9:00 - 10:30 or 1:00 - 2:30?) will consider participating! It was very rewarding for me.
The brief training evenings are well-organized and give just enough info to get started with
the program. In fact, I was impressed with the professionalism of the entire operation."
