WELCOME TO KING MIDDLE SCHOOL PTA
King PTA has three goals:
- Increase parent connections to King
- Build community among King families and between families, teachers and staff
- Raise funds to support programs and initiatives for student success, and to support the PTA’s work in building connections and community
With a parent population of over 1,500, we are proud that almost a third of our parents sign up to volunteer in some capacity during the year. With many projects underway, we also have a large number of parents serving in leadership. Our budget is over $165,000 and we raise this much through our Friends of King fundraising campaign and events such as the spring Run-a-Thon. We also raise an additional $20,000+/- in small grants, which vary from year to year.
We are careful with funds entrusted to us, adhering to budgeting and accounting practices that ensure PTA monies are secure and are accounted for and spent in accordance with the priorities of the school and the parent community.
We welcome your participation as a leader or volunteer and your donations to the Friends of King Campaign. Thank you in advance for your participation at King!

King PTA President

CURRENT PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES
Welcome Fair
PTA in partnership with King hosts a “Welcome Fair” immediately before school begins. Families can learn about and/or sign up for afterschool, sports, library, school lunch, PTA, PE Uniforms, etc. With 900+ students and their families, this is a Big Event requiring significant organization and staffing. To help with next year’s fair, email mlkpta@sbcglobal.net.6th Grade Room Parents
6th Grade Homeroom classes have Room Parents. Room Parents support teachers with field trips, in-class parent participation, communications and community building among 6th grade families. The Room Parent program is led by parent volunteer Phyllis Steiber. 1phyllie@comcast.netPE Clothing
7th and 8th graders are required to “dress” for PE in a navy blue t-shirt and navy blue shorts or sweatpants. PTA orders navy blue t-shirts, shorts, sweatpants and hoodies with the King Middle School logo that can be used for PE. They are sold at the Welcome Fair. After the Fair, students should contact their PE teachers if they wish to purchase additional items. Leslie Lippard is in charge of PTA uniforms for the current year, llippard@gmail.com.
6th Grade Directory
PTA produces a directory of all 6th grade students and families for whom we obtain written permission to publish contact information. This is the only directory produced and distributed at King and through High School. This year’s Directory was created parent by Susanne Zuerbig, kingparent@me.com. We currently do not have a volunteer to produce the directory next year. If no one steps up to take on this project, none will be produced for the 2012–13 Sixth Grade families. Contact Susanne if you can help!
E-Tree
E-Tree is the single most important communications tool at King. PTA is careful to ensure that only school-related messages are posted. At the beginning and end of the year, messages arrive daily with information critical to student success and parent participation. During the year, messages are less frequent but equally important. E-Tree is moderated by parent volunteer Susanne Zuerbig. If you would like to be added to the E-Tree, email kingparent@me.com.
Mailings
Parent volunteers gather in the Teacher’s Lounge, usually on a Friday morning, to mail report cards and other correspondence from the school and PTA. Mailings are a wonderful time to sit and get to know other parents while helping the school. Parent volunteer Susan Killibrew is in her third year of leading King’s mailings, slkillebrew@att.net.
Fundraising
If you would like to help with the Friends of King Campaign, the Run-a-Thon, or Escrip, please contact longtime parent volunteer Yumi Yuan, who is heading up Fundraising at King this year. This is Yumi’s last year as a parent at King. With her help, King has more than doubled its fundraising in the past three years. yy@tempsys.net.
Grants
Parent volunteer Ronnie Cohen has been writing grants for two years, with great success. This year, she has assembled a larger team to help. If you have grant-writing experience, please contact Ronnie. Racohen66@gmail.com
King Tours
King organizes tours and information sessions for families looking at King from outside of the district, as well as for families continuing to King from BUSD elementary schools. Parent Jane Tierney organizes and publicizes the tours. janetierney@me.com. This is Jane’s last year at King. We need a parent to step up to lead King tours! This is a great job for an organized parent who enjoys outreach to potential new students and families.
Website
The King website is maintained by parent volunteers. If you have expertise to offer to this effort, contact the King PTA: mlkpta@sbcglobal.net.
Writer Coach
Parent volunteers work one-on-one with every 8th grade student. This is a wonderful way to get on campus and contribute in a very personal way to the success of students at King. The program is facilitated by Kathleen Hallam who intakes, trains, and schedules all volunteers. kathallam@gmail.com
Hospitality
Food is at the heart of King’s efforts to build community and show thanks to our teachers and staff. Help is always appreciated. Parent Cindy Alwan is in her fourth year leading Hospitality. New leadership will be required in the coming year. Contact Cindy Alwan to help! Cindyalwan@gmail.com
Art in the Library
Parent volunteer and artist Jennifer Burke is heading up this very popular art program at King. During the lunch hour for one week of every month, students go to the library to do a variety of art and craft projects, with parent volunteers helping out. Contact Amielle Zemach, King’s Librarian, to help out. Amiellezemach@berkeley.net. If you need to contact Jennifer Burke, email jennyaws@yahoo.com
Gardens & Yards
King’s beautiful courtyard garden is maintained by parent volunteers. New King parent Andrea Paulos has volunteered to lead this effort. Work parties usually take place on Saturday mornings and include refreshments. Contact Andrea to help: corngirl@earthlink.net.
Office & Admin Volunteers
PTA and the school have occasional needs for parents who can help with data entry, making copies, organizing hand outs, and other “office work.” Parent Julie Weitz organizes this help. mjbtweitz@yahoo.com
Bulletin Boards
Currently there is no parent support for enhancing the many bulletin boards at King. Teachers and Administration could use help to showcase student work, art, and engaging information for our community. Email mlkpta@sbcglobal.net if this is a job for you!
Walk & Roll/Safe Routes
This group encourages biking, walking, bussing, skating, and other modes of alternative transportation to get to and from school. New parents Amber Evans is heading up King’s efforts with gusto. To join this group, contact Amber: amber@thetrollfamily.com
