Berkeley LEARNS King Visionaries After School Program Sports Teams

The Berkeley LEARNS Sports Program offers twelve different sports throughout the year.  The majority of the teams are competitive, but there are also intramural teams for some of the sports as well.  Intramural teams do not have a tryout process, but the competitive teams do.  Our Intramural (IM) teams are used to promote wellness and allow students who do not compete on our competitive teams an opportunity to be active, learn the fundamentals of a sport, and ultimately have fun.

I. TRYOUTS AND PARENTS MEETING

All tryout dates will be announced in the school bulletin and on e-tree and are posted on this website.  The most current schedule is available at this website link.  Tryout results will be posted outside King Visionaries Program office.  If you have any questions or concerns regarding the intramural or competitive sports teams, please contact Fred Sims, Athletic Coordinator at fredsims@berkeley.net or by telephone at (510) 883-6511.

Please note and mark your calendars for the MANDATORY parent meeting dates for your respective sport.  No student-athlete will be allowed to practice or compete in any games without a parent/guardian attending your sport’s parent meeting!  Any conflicts with this, please contact me directly at fredsims@berkeley.net or (510) 883-6511.

Please go to the bottom of this page to see the parent meeting schedule and the tryout schedule.

 II. FORMS AND REGISTRATION

Students WILL NOT be allowed to tryout for any team without completion of the required documents:

  1. FORMS: LEARNS Application signup form & LEARNS FEE scale
  2. FORM: Assumption of Risk for Participation in Voluntary Sports Program Waiver
  3. FORM: Medical Treatment Authorization Waiver
  4. FORM: BUSD Health Certification for Participation (signed and completed by a doctor)
1. LEARNS SIGNUP FORM & FEES
All of our sports offerings require that you enroll in our LEARNS Afterschool Program!  The athletic program is a part of the LEARNS Program, which entails a fee, but also allows our student-athletes to take advantage of our enrichment classes such as Homework Center, Drama, Artist Workshop, and Computer Science while playing a sport at King.  The LEARNS registration packet must be turned in prior to any student-athlete trying out for a sport.

There is a fee requirement to participating in a sport here at King!  The total fee for our sports offerings is $250 for each sport.  All of our sports seasons (except Cross Country, Tennis, and Track & Field) are two months long.  The LEARNS Program will bill each student-athlete a fee of $125 for each month of their 2-month season, resulting in a total fee of $250.  It is mandatory that the 1st month’s fee of $125 is paid prior to the first game of that season and the final payment of $125 made by the last game.  For the semester long sports of Cross Country and Track & Field, the first month’s fee MUST be paid prior to the first meet and the final payment of $125 made by the last meet.

If a family needs financial assistance for their student-athlete to participate in a sport, please contact our Program Coordinator – John Alford Leaks at (510) 883-6511/(johnalfordleaks@berkeley.net) or LaShonda Roquemore at (lashondaroquemore@berkeley.net).  You must show proof of income to be eligible for any fee reduction or scholarship.  Please bring a copy of this proof of income for us to keep on file.
.
If your child would like to compete in a sport only, they MUST have a physical packet on file prior to their tryout.  If they make the final roster, they MUST have a LEARNS packet on file and their 1st month’s fee of $125 MUST be paid prior to them practicing or competing in any games.
These forms are available at:
2. ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND PARTICIPATION WAIVER

All students must have a Assumption of Risk for Participation in Voluntary Sports Program waiver filled out.

This is available at

FORM: Assumption of Risk for Participation in Voluntary Sports Program Waiver

3. MEDICAL TREATMENT WAIVER

All students must have a Medical Treatment Authorization Waiver  filled out.

This is available at

FORM: Medical Treatment Authorization Waiver.

4. HEALTH CERTIFICATION

All of our student-athletes are required to have a current physical signed and stamped by their physician!  No student-athlete will be allowed to tryout for any sport without having a current physical on file in the LEARNS office (Room B1).  For the physical to be current, it must be signed, stamped, and dated after June 12th, 2015.  Please make a copy of the completed Physical Packet for your records and turn it in all together, as the separate pieces tend to get lost.  Any physicals without the necessary physician stamp will not be accepted!

If your in need of an immediate physical because time is of the essence, you can go to the following MD in Oakland and receive a same day physical for $20, regardless of your primary of secondary coverage.  Please call ahead and be sure to bring the LEARNS Physical Packet with you.
